The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a purebred dog breed that’s part of the working group. They also go by a couple of other nicknames, such as the Blackhead Karabas, Anatolian Blackhead, Anadolulu Karabas, Kangal, and the Coban Kopegi. Initially dating back to 1800 B.C. in Turkey, this doggo was first bred as a livestock guardian dog. This dog breed is loyal, independent, and reserved. To learn more about Anatolian Shepherd Dog puppies, keep reading.

Where to get Anatolian Shepherd Dog Puppies

When trying to find this dog breed, first try calling your local animal shelter or breed rescue organization. They might have Anatolian Shepherd Dog puppies, adults, or seniors available for adoption. It’s always best to adopt and don’t shop since these pups are looking for good homes, too. Rescuecity…

However, you can go through a reputable breeder if you want to know where the dog came from. You can look up ethical breeders on the AKC Marketplace. You’ll be able to tell the good breeders from the rest because they’ll do the following:

  • Health screen and genetically test the dogs before breeding to ensure it’s healthy and safe (and then get the puppies tested)
  • Have health documents and family tree history available for you to bring home upon adoption
  • Ensure the puppies are up to date on all of their vaccinations
  • Socialize and train the puppies as early as possible
  • Want to meet with you in person and allow you to meet the parents and the litter

If you find a breeder that does not do any of the above, then you’ll want to avoid them. They might be a backyard breeder or a puppy mill, so they most likely won’t breed the dogs in healthy or safe conditions. Also, they’re more interested in making a profit rather than finding good homes for the puppies.

The Cost

The average cost of Anatolian Shepherd Dog puppies is around $1,000. However, the price may vary depending on the time of year, the breeder’s location, or the breed’s popularity.

Appearance

Anatolian Shepherd Dogs are large, with males being slightly bigger than females. For example, males can grow to be about 29 to 32 inches tall and weigh between 110 and 150 pounds. On the other hand, females can grow to be about 28 to 31 inches tall and weigh between 80 and 120 pounds.

In addition, they have a short and smooth coat that can come in many different coat colors and markings, such as:

  • Blue Fawn
  • Brindle

Temperament

If you’re looking for a companion dog, this breed might not be the one for you. This doggo is loyal to its family, but they’re independent and reserved. So, they won’t be the most affectionate. Also, they’re especially reserved around meeting new people. They’re okay around other dogs and young children as long as they’re trained well.

For instance, this doggo needs early socialization and training. They are excellent watchdogs, so they shouldn’t be trained as guard dogs. Otherwise, they might become too aggressive toward others. Unfortunately, this dog isn’t easy to train. They’ll do better with an experienced dog owner and you’ll need to hire a professional dog trainer to help you out.

Otherwise, they have moderate energy levels. They won’t do well in an apartment and need a bigger house with a fenced-in yard.

Anatolian Shepherd Dog Puppies – Veterinary Needs

For the first yeah, you’ll want to keep track of your Anatolian Shepherd Dog’s growth and development. So, you can bring them to the vet often. Also, it’ll keep them up to date with their vaccinations. Then, every year after that, you can bring them once a year for their annual checkup.

However, this dog breed is prone to some health issues, such as:

  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Elbow Dysplasia
  • Tongue Tie
  • Dental Disease
  • Entropion
  • Bloat
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Patent Ductus Arteriosus

With proper care, Anatolian Shepherd Dog puppies have an average lifespan of about 11 to 13 years.

Diet

With your vet’s approval, you can provide this dog breed with any food that’s appropriate for their breed size, age, and weight. For example, you can give them high-quality kibble or canned wet food from a commercial dog food brand or homemade dog food.

Grooming

When it comes to grooming, this doggo is low-maintenance. You can bring them to a professional grooming salon once in a while for a good cleaning, but it’s not necessary. In addition, you can give them a bath as needed at home.

They do shed a little bit, so you’ll want to brush their coat at least once a week to keep that looking nice. Finally, be sure to keep up with brushing their teeth, trimming their nails, and cleaning their ears regularly.
