If you want to look at some Basenji photos to get a good idea of the breed, we’ve compiled some here.
They’re recognized for their pricked ears, curly tail, and glistening short coat. They’re undoubtedly beautiful dogs! They come in a variety of colors, though, most often red and white. However, a lot of their coat colors meet breed standard by the AKC’s rules.
In terms of personality and temperament, they’re often compared to cats. They will groom themselves a lot and can be a challenge to train, as they don’t necessarily always want to listen. That means that for first-time owners, this breed could prove to be a challenge, and you might want to stick with something easier.
However, if you have experience, they might be great for you, as they’re very devoted. They do have high exercise needs that you should prepare to meet.
They’re also natural hunters, so may not do well with small pets. You will also have to spend a long time working on their recall and “leave it” cue. These can take months to become reliable.
This is definitely a breed for someone experienced with dogs. You need to be willing to put in the work to make them the best they can be. It can work if you’re a first-time owner, but you will need to do a lot of research and be aware of the time and effort required.
