Basenji puppies are more unusual to see than some other dogs, but they’re worth looking into if you’re considering a puppy. This old breed originated in Africa and is a truly great dog.

For everything you need to know about them, we’ve got you covered.

Where To Get Basenji Puppies

If you’re committed to adopting a dog, you might have to settle for a Basenji mix or older dog. Purebred dogs are hard to come by in shelters, though some rescues may have them. Rescues, however, tend to have strict adoption requirements, so bear that in mind! Ayla…

Your best bet for a Basenji puppy is to look for a breeder. This can come with its own set of issues, as many breeders are unethical. They breed mixed dogs and claim they’re purebred while not health checking the puppies, or they don’t socialize them well. This creates problems down the line when the puppy goes to a family that is left with an anti-social dog and expensive vet bills.

Don’t let that scare you! It just means you need to do your research, and avoid the following breeder red flags:

  • Won’t let you meet the parents
  • Can’t provide health records
  • Gives you the puppy before it’s eight weeks old
  • Wants to meet in a neutral location

Any good breeder will be transparent and open about their practices. Elene…

The Cost

You can expect Basenji puppies to cost anywhere between $1500 and $3000, depending on the lines they come from. Although this might seem like a lot, it’s important to remember that wellbred puppies mean fewer vet bills and training costs to fix problematic behavior!

Basenji dogs are recognizable by their pricked ears and curled tail. They’re very graceful small dogs with short coats, and can come in a variety of colors. Breed standard, however, dictates they have white feet, chests, and tips of their tails. Ittury_puzzle…

These dogs tend to become attached to one human, and it can make them wary of strangers. While you want your dog to bond to you, you also want them to be good with strangers! You can combat this with lots of early socialization and making every meeting with a stranger a good one. However, it’s also important to remember and accept that this dog will never be hugely social.

They are very intelligent and energetic. You’ll have a puppy that catches onto things quickly, but does need a lot of outlets for their energy. This means both physically and mentally. Long walks and hikes are great, but you should also provide puzzles and enrichment to make sure they get what they need. Otherwise, you might find you have a destructive dog on your hands!

The last thing to bear in mind is that your dog will have a high prey drive. That means it can be dangerous to introduce them to cats and other small animals, and they’re best off in a home without them. Djuvanstar…

Basenji Puppies – Veterinary Needs

Like any dogs, Basenji puppies need a series of shots to protect them against nasty viruses like parvovirus, distemper, etc. This series usually starts when they’re eight weeks old and ends when they’re around sixteen weeks. They’ll also get their rabies vaccine at the end of this.

Any dog needs a veterinary check-up once a year to ensure they’re healthy and happy.

They tend to have a fairly long life span and are generally healthy dogs. Sbp…

Whether you choose to feed your dog raw or kibble, it’s up to you. The main thing you should avoid is grain-free food, as this has been linked to heart disease in dogs. Any brand that advertises itself as grain-free is a no-go!

If you choose kibble, remember that not all foods are created equal. Consult with your vet to make sure the food has all of the ingredients and nutrients they need to stay healthy, and that it doesn’t have a lot of filler.

Raw-feeding is also a valid choice, but don’t try to cook your dog’s meals yourself. They also need grains and other things as well as meat, as dogs are omnivores, not carnivores! There are various subscription services that will prepare your dog’s meals for you, and these tend to be the best bet.

Treats should never make up more than 10% of your dog’s diet. Spb…

Basenji Puppies

Because of their short coat, Basenji puppies are fairly low-maintenance when it comes to grooming. They need to be brushed once in a while and, like any dog, you’ll have to clip their nails on a regular basis. A good rule of thumb is every six to eight weeks, or when the nails start to tap on the floor.

You can use nail clippers or a Dremel, but the important thing is getting them used to it at an early age. It’ll make your life easier in the future!
