Keeping any dog healthy will ensure a long and happy life for your pet. Beagles are no exception. Since they are very intelligent dogs, keeping your beagle mentally well is as important as keeping them physically well. Here are five ways you can improve your beagle’s life.

Beagle Health – The Key Facts

It may seem obvious, but make sure you are visiting a veterinarian regularly for check-ups and vaccinations. We’ve listed five more basic things to keep track of if you want your beagle to be healthy.

1. Keep Them At A Healthy Weight

Beagles are prone to obesity, which makes other genetic issues like hip dysplasia worse. If it is difficult to see their ribs through their skin, they are most likely overweight. Make sure to feed them high-quality food and give them enough exercise. Walk them once or twice a day, giving them a more intensive cardio workout once a week.

2. Give Them Mental Stimulation

Beagles were bred to follow their noses. Activities like scent training and detection classes give the benefits of both physical and mental exercise for your beagle. These are intelligent dogs and they need a mental workout as well as physical ones.

3. Give Them A Friend

Dogs are pack animals, and beagles especially are very social. Getting them a friend, or organizing dog meetups for your pet, helps them tap into that pack mentality and boosts their mood. This also adds to their mental stimulation.

4. Replace Lost Fluids

All that exercise is good for your beagle, as long as you make sure they don’t overheat or dehydrate. While it was once though only being left in a hot car could cause a dog heatstroke, new evidence suggests heatstroke may occur due to over-exertion in hot weather. Keep fresh, cool water on hand for long walks or park visits.

5. Avoid Stress And Boredom

Since beagles are so social, being left alone for long periods of time may cause undue stress, boredom, anxiety, and depression. This may lead to other destructive behaviors. Try not to leave your beagle alone for more than four hours.
