Bernedoodle Puppies

Bernedoodle puppies are becoming increasingly popular lately! They’re not actually a breed, but a mix between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle.

If you’d like to get a Bernedoodle puppy, read on to research them first!

Where To Get Bernedoodle Puppies

Although shelters are often full of mixed-breed dogs, it’s hard to find a Bernedoodle puppy in one. This is because they’re a highly-sought-after designer breed. Blue.River.Doodles…

You can always call around and ask, but expect to visit a breeder.

The only thing is that breeders who breed mixed dogs are a little harder to research. You can narrow down your search for a reputable purebred dog by making sure the breeder has AKC papers (or papers from another registry at least) to prove they’re legitimate. Mixed breed dogs can’t have AKC papers, so you’ll have to be extra careful. The last thing you want is your puppy to have health or temperament issues because the breeder didn’t choose the parents well enough or give the puppy the best start in life.

General breeder red flags include dodging questions, asking to meet in a neutral location, selling the puppy to their new home before eight weeks old, and having no records of shots or health checks. The_Ozarks…

The Cost

A Bernedoodle can cost anywhere from $2000 up. If you want a rare color, you’re going to be paying a lot more.

Appearance

The Bernedoodle is likely to be a large dog, since it’s mixing two large breeds — one more so than the other! They can take either the Poodle or Bernese coat, but the ideal is that they take the Poodle’s because there’s less shedding and this is what people usually want with Doodles. They come in a variety of colors. Kaysdoods…

Temperament

Bernedoodles are the perfect mix of a Poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog. Highly intelligent, these dogs lack the stubborn streak that many clever pups have which makes them a delight to train. They’ll learn manners quickly and are happy to learn tricks too, since they love pleasing their humans.

Because they’re intelligent and active, you do have to make sure they have outlets for that. Plenty of exercise and enrichment will help. Snuffle mats and puzzles are great stimulation for these dogs.

Overall, you should have a very affectionate family member. They’re great with kids and tend to be good with other animals too, but take introductions slowly. Even trustworthy dogs should never be left unsupervised with cats or anything smaller that don’t have an escape route, as they can do more damage than they might realize due to their size. Coco…

Bernedoodle Puppies – Veterinary Needs

Like any dogs, Bernedoodle puppies need a series of shots to protect them against nasty viruses like parvovirus, distemper, etc. This series usually starts when they’re between six and eight weeks old and ends when they’re around sixteen to eighteen weeks. They’ll also get other vaccines at the end — most importantly, rabies, which is illegal for your dog not to have.

Afterwards, they’ll need veterinary check-ups once a year and consistent flea and heartworm prevention medicine.

It’s hard to predict the potential health problems of a mixed dog the same way we can with purebred dogs. However, keeping up with veterinary visits ensures that your vet will catch any issues that arise. Weaversdoodles…

Diet

The main thing you should avoid when it comes to diet is grain-free food, as this has been linked to heart disease in dogs. Otherwise, kibble is a convenient choice for feeding and perfectly fine to use. Just make sure that you check out the ingredients and ask for your vet’s advice. Some dry food is full of filler and doesn’t have the proper nutrients your dog needs, so you’ll want to be careful as this can cause health issues down the line.

Some people swear by feeding raw, which is another valid choice. However, you shouldn’t create a diet for your dog by yourself without any research. Dogs are ominvores! They need more than just meat. Some subscription services can prepare diets especially for your dog and deliver them to your door, although these do get pricey. Still, they’re the best option for raw-feeding. Athomedoodles…

Grooming

When it comes to grooming, your Bernedoodle will need frequent trips to the groomers to keep their coat in top shape. Don’t forget this, as it’s vital to them not needing mats cut out later!

Clean their ears and teeth often to prevent infections and health issues. You should also clip their nails whenever they start to tap on the floor. You can use nail clippers or a Dremel, but the key is introducing them at an early age with lots of high-value treats and praise. That way, they associate nail care with a good time!
