The original Boston Terrier was crossbred in America in the 1860s from an English dog named Judge. Judge was an established pit fighting dog, used to aggressive canine sports. While there are physical similarities, the modern Boston Terrier could not resemble Judge less in terms of temperament. We call the breed “the American Gentleman” for a reason. These funny and amiable dogs do well in urban landscapes, as well as in suburban family homes. From their origin onward, the Boston Terrier has been Boston’s city mascot, as well as mascots for several university sports teams.
Boston Terriers have a short and smooth coat. They are usually black, brindle, or a dark brown color called seal. Bostons also have white markings, commonly in the shape of a tuxedo. They shed a bit less than other breeds, making them great for some allergy sufferers. Since their coats are short, they have minimal grooming needs. Brush them once weekly with a soft bristle brush or a gentle grooming glove. This helps spread their natural oils throughout their coats and skin, keeping them shiny. Boston Terriers only need baths when they get stinky or get into a mess. Trim their nails and brush their teeth regularly.
A Friendly Breed
Boston Terriers get along with basically everyone. They’re great with kids, strangers, and other dogs. Their playful and fun energy makes them consistently one of America’s most popular dog breeds.
How much exercise a Boston Terrier will need depends on the individual. However, a Boston will always prefer exercise and play time with a human. If you don’t devote some time to your Boston Terrier every day, they may develop undesirable and destructive behaviors. Like a lot of breeds, you can always channel their energy into canine sports like agility and rally.
In terms of training, Boston Terriers are eager to please their owners. They do tend to be very sensitive. Stick with positive reinforcement techniques and a gentle and calm tone. Puppy socialization is especially important with Boston Terriers. It helps them develop into well-mannered and friendly adults.
