The Braque du Bourbonnais is one of several ancient French pointer breeds. Originally bred in the Bourbon province of France, it’s served as a companion and pointer for foot hunters since the 15th century. Even now, they’re experts at pointing out felled game birds in the field. The first official breed club for the Braque du Bourbonnais formed in France in 1925. The club succeeded at bringing the breed back into popularity after the destruction of World War 1. Today, the breed enjoys more popularity in the United States than in its original home of France.
The Braque du Bourbonnais has a distinctive, smooth-haired and short coat in a liver and fawn ticking pattern. They have very basic grooming needs. Keep to the occasional bath and periodic gentle brush, and your Braque du Bourbonnais will look and feel their best. Expect some shedding, but not as much as other breeds. Check inside their ears on a frequent basis for wax buildup, dirt, and signs of infection. Brush their teeth regularly with toothpaste and toothbrushes for dogs.
Energy and Temperament
A Braque du Bourbonnais will be very eager to please you as their owner. They do very well with all types of training. Their emotionally intuitive natures mean it will be easy for them to sense your mood and respond to it. During training, they will want and appreciate frequent eye contact.
Braque du Bourbonnaises do all right with children, and tend to balance affection with independence with the ones they love. Since they are used to hunting in packs, they’re a breed that does really well with other dogs. Once they warm up to strangers, they can be friendly, but tend to be wary overall of people they don’t know.
Your high-energy Braque du Bourbonnais will love all kinds of activities. These can include regular walks, games of fetch, and running in a big yard. If you want to branch out, this breed loves swimming, agility, and even indoor games like hide-and-seek.
