The Akita is a purebred dog breed that’s part of the working group. They came from northern Japan and are part of the Spitz group of breeds. This dog breed was initially bred to be a hunter. For example, they would hunt larger animals such as wild boar, deer, and the Yezo bear. They were also a symbol of happiness and long life. For example, an Akita figurine would be given to newborn children.

Akitas are large dog breeds, ranging from 24 to 26 inches tall and weighing between 70 and 130 pounds. Females are usually on the smaller end of that spectrum, while males are at the larger end. You’ll also be able to find this dog breed in various coat colors. For example, a few colors can be black, fawn, red, white, or brown brindle. Despite their large size, the Akita has an average lifespan of about ten to 14 years.

If you’re looking for a family companion dog, the Akita will do well. Of course, they’ll need plenty of proper training and early socialization from an experienced dog owner. Akitas are independent and intelligent, so training might take a while to show who’s boss. Also, they’re loyal to their family members but aren’t the most affectionate. Finally, they’ll need time to get used to young children. Overall, Akitas will do better in a home with single adults and no children or other dogs.

The Akita – Better Alone

For instance, Akitas will not get along well with other dogs, and they certainly won’t get along with strangers. This dog breed isn’t aggressive, but they take their watchdog duties seriously. They’ll alert you of something off and bark and growl at intruders. In addition, they have moderate energy levels and will need exercise through long walks every day.

Finally, the Akita sheds a lot and will need brushing two to three times per week. Going to a grooming salon at least once a month will also be ideal for keeping them clean and healthy.
