The American English Coonhound is a purebred dog breed that’s part of the hound group. This dog breed is one of six Coonhound breeds. In fact, this breed is American, but they have English ancestry from other Coonhound dogs. They were initially bred to hunt foxes during the day and raccoons at night. Today, they’re known to be sweet, mellow, and sociable.
This dog breed is medium in size. Males are usually slightly taller than females. For instance, males can grow to stand up to 24 to 26 inches tall, and females can grow to be about 23 to 25 inches tall. Regardless of gender, they can both weigh about 45 to 65 pounds. Their coats can come in various colors: black, blue, brown, red, tri-colored, or more.
With proper care, American English Coonhounds have an average lifespan of about 11 to 12 years. They don’t require much when it comes to grooming, so that you can bring them to a professional grooming salon once every two to three months. Or you can groom them at home for some bonding time. However, they do shed a little bit, so you’ll also want to keep up with brushing their coat at least once a week. Also, this doggo has high energy levels and will need plenty of space to run around. A bigger house with a fenced-in yard will be better than an apartment. Also, you can bring them on long walks and hikes with you.
