The American Staffordshire Terrier is often deemed as falling under the “pitbull” group. That means they must be aggressive and make terrible family pets, right? Wrong!
Although the pitbull reputation as a whole is entirely unfair, it’s particularly wrong when it comes to the American Staffordshire Terrier. These dogs are true family dogs. They love their people and are eager to please. They also tend to be gentle with kids, though introductions should be slow and kids should be taught to respect their space — this, however, is true of any breed of dog!
Make sure you train your dog with positive reinforcement and put the time into socializing and training them. Give them lots of positive experiences as puppies and reinforce the behavior you want. The reward will be a friendly and loyal dog.
They’re highly trainable dogs, but they do love having something to do. Take them on long walks and stimulate their minds with enrichment activities. Puzzle toys are great for this, as are frozen kongs that they really have to work at. You could also scatter their meals in a snuffle mat so it takes them a while to get through it.
American Staffordshire Terrier – An Easy To Groom Dog
In terms of appearance, these are powerful, sturdy dogs that come in a variety of colors — from solid colors to brindle coats. Their short coats mean their grooming needs aren’t particularly high, so they’re a good choice for owners who don’t want to have to brush their dog every single day. As with any dog, however, you’ll still have to keep with keeping their ears and teeth clean and making sure their nails are in good shape. Fortunately, the American Staffordshire Terrier is so gentle that none of this should prove to be an issue. A joy of a dog to own.
