According to the American Kennel Club, the Azawakh is a purebred dog breed classified as part of the hound group. This dog breed was initially bred for many purposes. For instance, they were sighthounds to protect their family and territory from invaders. They were also excellent hunters, providing meat for their families. They would hunt animals such as hare, antelope, and wild boar. Today, they are family companion dogs known for being loyal, deeply affectionate, and independent.
They’re medium-sized dogs where males are slightly larger and heavier than females. For example, males can grow to be about 25 to 29 inches tall and weigh between 44 and 55 pounds. On the other hand, females can grow to be about 23.5 to 27.5 inches tall and weigh between 33 and 44 pounds. In addition, they can be found having many coat colors, such as black, blue, brindle, brown, cream, fawn, grey, red, sandy, or white.
Despite their size, you’ll be able to have this dog breed in a bigger house with a fenced-in yard or an apartment. They’re quiet dogs, barely barking at all, so they won’t drive your neighbors crazy. Also, they have moderate energy levels. While they’ll need a good long walk every day for exercise to keep them fit, they won’t have the urge to run around in the yard as often as some other breeds. Of course, having a yard is ideal, but an apartment will suit them fine.
The Azawakh – A Low Maintenance Dog
In addition, they don’t need much grooming at all. In fact, they only shed a little bit, so you’ll only need to brush their coat once in a while. This dog breed is low-maintenance, but they are challenging to train thanks to their independence. So, you can hire a professional dog trainer to help you out. Otherwise, with proper care, this doggo is a great companion and has an average lifespan of about 12 to 15 years.
