The Belgian Malinois is a purebred dog breed, initially bred as a herding dog in Belgium. This dog breed has been around for many years, but it didn’t come to the United States until 1911. Then, after World War II, this dog breed almost went extinct. However, in the early 1960s, breeders came together to keep this purebred going. Today, the Belgian Malinois still herd flocks, but they’re also versatile with other jobs. For example, they’re also excellent military and police K-9 dogs. Overall, this dog breed is confident, smart, and hardworking.

This dog breed is medium-sized, with males slightly larger and heavier than females. For instance, males can grow to be about 24 to 26 inches tall and weigh between 60 and 80 pounds. On the other hand, females can grow to be about 22 to 24 inches tall and weigh between 40 and 60 pounds. In addition, the Belgian Malinois has a short and smooth coat that can come in many coat colors. For example, they can have a fawn, mahogany, red, red sable, or fawn sable coat with or without a black mask. If you want to elongate their lifespan, you can provide proper care for this dog breed. Then they’ll have an average lifespan of about 14 to 16 years.

For instance, you’ll want to bring this dog breed to a professional grooming salon once every couple of months. The Belgian Malinois only needs a bath as needed and won’t need to be clipped often. However, they do shed a decent amount. So, be sure to brush their coat at least once a week to keep the loose hairs under control. In addition, they have high energy levels and need a good 90 minutes per day of physical activity in a fenced-in yard.

Belgian Malinois – A Loyal Dog

Overall, the Belgian Malinois will make a fine family companion dog with proper training and early socialization. They’ll be loyal and affectionate with their family members. Also, they’re good with young children, other dogs, and strangers.
