The Black Russian Terrier was created in the USSR. You might expect this to be a Terrier-type dog, as the name suggests, but a lot of breeds were involved in creating this one. It’s not a true Terrier at all! It’s an incredibly large dog with a black coat that has a coarse outer layer. The coat doesn’t shed very much so if you have allergies, you shouldn’t need to worry about it. However, no dog is truly hypoallergenic.

These are highly intelligent dogs who are very confident in themselves. With that, however, can also come some stubbornness! Prepare to see some regression in training every now and again. Although this can be frustrating, you should keep your patience and pull through. If you remain calm and consistent, you’ll see some amazing results and this dog can be truly adaptable. They make great guard dogs for families with children and will be extremely loyal.

Due to that guarding nature, however, you might find that they’re particularly reserved with strangers. This can be a problem if your Black Russian Terrier decides that no strangers are acceptable! To combat this, make sure you introduce your dog to a lot of new people when they’re a pup. If you do this and create positive experiences, they’ll learn strangers are good. This is essential, as the last thing you want is a dog that’s fearful of new people.

Black Russian Terrier – An Active Dog

As they’re a working breed, you can expect high activity levels. Their size and activity make them not particularly suited for apartments. They do best with some enclosed outdoor space to room, and definitely need an outlet for that energy. A bored dog can often become an unhappy and destructive dog, so make sure you have the right home for a Black Russian Terrier.
