Although the Bloodhound has quite a daunting name, these dogs are actual sweethearts. They’re sure to be gentle with the whole family, including kids, and develop a real bond with the people they love most. They truly want their people to love them back which makes them highly affectionate.

Does that mean everything about them is great? No, because every breed has their challenges, and you should make sure you’re the right home for a Bloodhound.

For example, they do have a high prey drive because they’re hunting dogs. Which this never manifests as aggression towards humans, it can make them lock onto small animals. They often aren’t the best choice to live with cats, and even smaller animals are a real risk. Never leave them alone unsupervised with your smaller furry friends.

They also have a stubborn streak that can make obedience training hard. When they latch onto a scent, they’re also liable to follow it for hours. You should practice recall training when they’re young and utilize a long leash. Never just assume they’ll be completely fine off-leash until you have a great handle on their recall and even then, be wary.

Bloodhound – Look Out For Health Issues

They’re black and tan, and on the larger side. You can usually recognize them by their long floppy ears.

There are also some health issues to be aware of with Bloodhounds. They suffer from a lot of gastrointestinal diseases and have a lot of problems with their skin, ears, and eyes. They have one of the shortest lifespans of most breeds which means you should prepare yourself for that when taking one on. Pet insurance is always a good idea, but even more so with these dogs as you may be facing a lot of vet bills over time. A Great dog.
