Everyone who knows anything about dogs knows the Border Collie! These medium-sized dogs have a black and white coat that can come in smooth and rough varieties and is usually long. They have a slender, elegant body, and pricked ears.
If you know anything about the Border Collie, you’ve likely heard about their energy levels. They’re extremely active dogs because breeders intended for them to be herding and working dogs. They need a good, long walk a day and although they can live in apartments if their owner gets out a lot, they’re usually better off with a fenced-in backyard. Border Collies love to run and play games and the more space they have to do that, the better!
They’re also very intelligent, and you’ll be shocked at how fast your dog learns. They don’t, however, always use this for good! These dogs can be mischievous and manipulative, so if you’re taking one on, prepare to have a lot of patience with training.
Border Collie – A Smart Dog
Although they can be great family pets, you need to take some care. They don’t tend to have a prey drive or become aggressive, they do have that herding drive! That means they might chase smaller animals or kids if they run through the house, and they might nip more than your average puppy. Teaching a “leave it” verbal cue and recall is vital for this, and as the dog matures, they should listen more and more.
You shouldn’t leave this animal alone for many long periods at a time or neglect them. If you do, they will definitely use their intelligence and stamina for bad! If you get a Border Collie, prepare to actively engage with them as much as they require. A very rewarding dog that you will love owning.
