The Briard is a confident, smart, and playful purebred dog breed. Also known as the Berger de Brie, this doggo originated in France and is part of the herding group. Initially, they were bred in the 1300s to be herders and guardians for sheep. They can still perform those duties today while being excellent family companion dogs.

Briards are medium to large-sized dogs, with males being slightly taller than females. For example, males can grow to be about 23 to 27 inches tall, while females can grow about 22 to 25.5 inches tall. Regardless of gender, this dog breed can weigh anywhere between 55 and 100 pounds. In addition, they have a long double coat that’s wavy. Their coat can be black, gray, or tawny. Luckily, they barely shed. However, require regular upkeep when it comes to grooming. To keep their coat in tip-top shape, you’ll want to bring them to a professional grooming salon at least once a month. At home, you’ll need to care for their coat by brushing at least once a day to keep the tangles and knots away.

Briard – A Great Family Dog

In addition, the Briard has moderate energy levels. So, to keep them healthy and fit, you’ll want to provide them with at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. You can bring them to the dog park or doggy daycare if you want. However, they need a lot of early socialization and training to get used to strangers and other dogs. Otherwise, they’ll do fine in a bigger house with a fenced-in yard to themselves. They can also live in an apartment since they rarely bark. However, you’ll need to ensure you give them enough playtime outside.

Also, you’ll want to bring them to the vet at least once a year since this dog breed is prone to some health issues. In addition, you can keep them up to date with their vaccinations. The Briard has an average lifespan of about ten to 12 years with great care.
