The Brussels Griffon is a purebred dog breed that’s part of the toy group. They go by many different names, such as Belgian Griffon, Petit Brabancon, Griffon Belge, or the Griffon Bruxellios. This dog breed comes from Belgium, originating in the 1800s. Initially, the Brussels Griffon was bred to be a hunter of small vermin. Also, they’re meant to be companion dogs. Overall, this dog breed is loyal, alert, and curious.

For example, they’re affectionate with their family members and are also open to meeting new people. However, they need some time to warm up with young children and other dogs. Early socialization and training will do the trick and, luckily, this dog breed is easy to train.

Brussels Griffons are small dogs, growing to be about seven to ten inches tall. In addition, they only weigh between eight and ten pounds. Also, they can have different coats. For example, they can be short or medium, smooth or wavy. They always have a double coat, though that can be black, belge, black & tan, or red with no markings.

Grooming will depend on the type of coat they have. However, you’ll still want to bring them to a professional grooming salon at least once a month for a good cleaning and a bath. In addition, the Brussels Griffon sheds a moderate amount. To keep the loose hairs under control, you’ll want to brush their coat at least two to three times per week.

In addition to grooming, this dog breed has moderate energy levels and requires about 45 minutes of physical activity every day. So, they can do well in a bigger house with a fenced-in yard or an apartment. However, be mindful that this small dog loves to bark and they’ll bark loud and proud most of the day.

Otherwise, be sure to bring your doggo to the vet at least once a year for their annual checkup. The Brussels Griffon has an average lifespan of about 12 to 15 years.
