The Bullmastiff is a purebred dog breed, part of the working group. Initially bred in England in the 1800s, this dog breed was originally used for gamekeepers and guarding. This dog breed is brave, but they’re also loyal and affectionate. Bullmastiffs make excellent family companion dogs as long as an experienced dog owner helps train and lead them.

For example, the Bullmastiff is excellent and affectionate around their family members. They’re also good around young children, other dogs, and meeting new people, as long as they have time to warm up to them. For instance, early socialization and early training will be a good idea. You also might want to hire a professional dog trainer to help you out.

Bullmastiffs need an experienced dog owner because they’re a watchdog first. Also, they’re large dogs, with males being slightly bigger than females. For example, males can grow to be about 25 to 27 inches tall and weigh between 110 and 130 pounds. On the other hand, females can grow to be about 24 to 26 inches tall and weigh between 100 and 120 pounds. Also, the Bullmastiff has a short and smooth coat that doesn’t require too much grooming. However, they shed a moderate amount and need weekly brushing to keep the loose hairs under control. In addition, the Bullmastiff drools moderately. So, to stave off infection and odor, you’ll need to wash their face at least once a week.

Bullmastiff – A Big Dog

Due to their size, the Bullmastiff needs a bigger house with a fenced-in yard. They won’t do well in an apartment, even though they have medium energy levels. For example, this dog breed needs about 40 minutes of physical activity per day. The activity can be a long walk, and that’s enough to keep them healthy and fit.

Finally, bring them to the vet at least once a year for their annual checkup. With proper care, Bullmastiffs have an average lifespan of about seven to nine years.
