The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is one of two Welsh Corgi breeds. Corgis are perhaps one of the most recognizable dogs due to their short legs and long body shape. They are double-coated and come in a variety of colors, from brindle to black and white. The thing to remember is, despite the fact the coat is often short, it’s dense and may shed a lot!
Due to their shape and back, Corgis suffer too often from Canine Intervertebral Disc Disease frequently. Make sure the breeder health tests the parents if you buy from a breeder, and pet insurance can also be a huge help with things like this.
In terms of personality, people often expect the Cardigan Welsh Corgi to be a couch potato due to its stout stature, but they couldn’t be more wrong! These Corgis are actually herding breeds. That means they have quite a bit of energy raring to go. Although they can live in apartments and do well, they’ll need at least one good walk a day to ensure their needs are met. Corgis are incredibly athletic, so this is non-negotiable unless you want belongings destroyed out of boredom!
Cardigan Welsh Corgi – A Smart Dog
They are very affectionate and highly intelligent. They take well to training as long as you have a hands-on, consistent approach, and you can motivate them with high-value treats.
They’re also surprisingly capable guard dogs. They can be a little wary with strangers. Make sure you start training as soon as possible, as well as socialization. Letting them meet plenty of strangers is very helpful if the experiences are positive. Strangers can give them treats to ensure everything goes well, and reassure your Cardigan Welsh Corgi that strangers are good, actually! You will be more than happy with this wonderful dog breed.
