The Central Asian Shepherd is a purebred dog breed, initially bred nearly 5,000 years ago. Also known as the Central Asian Ovtcharka, Middle Asian Ovtcharka, or the Mid-Asian Shepherd, this dog breed is not for the faint of heart. They need an experienced dog owner to care for them. For instance, they’re massive dogs known for being independent, courageous, and self-confident. However, the breed is a great companion dog.

Central Asian Shepherds are large dogs, growing to be about 25.5 to 27.5 inches tall. In addition, they weigh between 88 and 110 pounds. Also, they have medium double coats that can come in a few different coat colors, such as black, brindle, fawn, gray, or white. With proper care, you can ensure that the Central Asian Shepherd has an average lifespan of about 12 to 14 years.

For example, grooming is low-maintenance. However, they do shed a lot. So, you’ll want to brush their coat at least once a day to keep the shedding under control. However, you can bring your pup to a professional grooming salon for a good cleaning and bath once in a while.

Central Asian Shepherd – A Huge Dog

Also, this dog breed has moderate energy levels. However, they need ample physical activity and playtime every day. For instance, the Central Asian Shepherd won’t do well in an apartment due to their exercise needs and large size. They’ll need a bigger house with a fenced-in yard.

Finally, this purebred is known to get some health issues. So, you’ll want to bring them to the vet at least once a year for an annual checkup.

Overall, this doggo will be loyal and affectionate with their family members. However, they need time to warm up to young children, other dogs, and strangers. In addition, they need early training and early socialization. Even if you’re an experienced dog owner, you’ll want to hire a professional dog trainer to help.
