The Chabrador, also known as the Chab, Chowbrador, Chowder, Chow-Lab, or Labrachow, is a mixed breed of the Chow Chow and the Labrador Retriever. Initially bred as a companion and guardian, this crossbreed takes excellent qualities from both of its parent breeds. The Chow Chow is a guard dog, and the Labrador Retriever is a family dog, so you’ll have a well-rounded, versatile dog with the Chabrador.

Both parent breeds are medium to large-sized dogs. So, you can expect the Chabrador to be medium to large-sized, with males being slightly bigger and heavier than females. For instance, males can grow to be about 21 to 24 inches tall and weigh between 55 and 80 pounds. On the other hand, females can grow to be about 20 to 23 inches tall, weighing between 50 and 75 pounds. In addition, this hybrid has a double coat that can take after either parent breed. So, for example, they can have a coat color from the Labrador Retriever or the Chow Chow.

Chabrador – A Great Family Dog

With excellent care, you’ll have your Chabrador as part of the family for a long time. For instance, their average lifespan is about nine to 12 years. This dog breed requires a monthly bath to stay clean. Also, they shed a considerable amount. So, if you want to keep the loose hairs under control and not have fur all over your clothes and furniture, brushing its coat regularly is a must. For instance, you can brush them at least three to four times per week, if not daily. They also need an hour of exercise per day in the form of long walks. They don’t have high energy needs but need physical activity to stay fit and healthy.

Overall, the Chabrador is loyal and affectionate with their family members. They’re excellent with young kids and are great at meeting new dogs. Thanks to their guarding instincts, they’ll be wary of meeting new people at first. However, they’ll get better with early training and early socialization.
