The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a purebred dog breed part of the sporting group. Also known as the Chessie, this dog breed was initially bred for duck hunting in frigid waters. However, they’re a versatile dog breed. For example, they’re also excellent therapy dogs, K-9 search-and-rescue dogs, bomb detection, and excel in canine sports. In addition, this purebred is affectionate, sensitive, and bright. So, they’ll be an excellent family companion dog.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are medium to large-sized dogs where males are typically bigger and heavier than females. For example, males can be about 23 to 26 inches tall, weighing 65 and 80 pounds. On the other hand, females can grow to be about 21 to 24 inches tall and weigh between 55 to 70 pounds. In addition, this dog breed has a waterproof, wiry coat that protects them from water and cold temperatures. You can find this breed in a few different coat colors, such as brown, dark brown, deadgrass, dark deadgrass, light brown, light deadgrass, sedge, or tan.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever – A High Energy Dog

Luckily, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever doesn’t require too much grooming. For instance, you can bring them to a professional grooming salon once in a while for a bath, but it’s not needed. However, they do shed a considerable amount. So, if you don’t want fur all over your clothes and furniture, be sure to brush their coat weekly to keep the loose hairs under control. In addition, this dog breed has high energy levels and needs a lot of physical activity every day. About 90 minutes will do with long walks, hikes, runs, swimming, and other mentally stimulating activities.

Overall, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is an excellent family companion dog. For instance, they’re loyal and affectionate with their family members. Also, they’re great with young children, with other dogs, and with meeting new people. In addition, they’re a good watchdog, so they’ll alert you if anything seems off. Plus, they’re easy to train.
