The Chow Shepherd is a mixed breed of the Chow Chow and the German Shepherd. Also known as the Sheprachow, this hybrid was initially bred as a guardian and companion dog. However, it’s unknown where and when this crossbreed came to be. Regardless, the Chow Shepherd is a playful yet protective companion for many families. However, they are high maintenance to care for.

Chow Shepherds are large dogs, growing to be about 22 to 26 inches tall. In addition, they can weigh anywhere between 45 and 90 pounds. Their appearance can look like either parent breed when it comes to their appearance. However, you can be sure they’ll most likely have a long coat that can come in a few different colors, such as brown, black, red, fawn, cream, or gray. With proper care of their coat and other needs, this hybrid has the potential to live an average lifespan of ten to 14 years.

Both parent breeds are heavy shedders, so you can be sure that the Chow Shepherd will shed a ton. So, you’ll want to brush their coat every day to keep the loose hairs under control and off of your clothes and furniture. Also, you can bring them to a professional grooming salon once in a while for an as-needed bath and clipping.

The Chow Shepherd – An Active Dog

In addition, this dog breed comes from two working dogs who are both athletic and confident. The Chow Shepherd will need at least 75 minutes of physical activity every day to remain healthy and fit. They won’t do well in an apartment but need a bigger house with a fenced-in yard. Also, they can inherit some health issues from their parents, so bring your doggo to the vet at least once a year for an annual checkup.

Overall, the Chow Shepherd is a great family dog. For instance, they’re loyal and affectionate with their family members. Also, they’re great with young children, other dogs, and new people. However, they do need early training and socialization.
