The German Long Haired Pointer is a purebred dog breed from Germany in 1878. This dog breed was initially bred as a multi-purpose gun dog. They also go by a few other nicknames, such as the Deutscher Langhaariger, Deutscher Langhaariger Vorstehhund, Langhaar, or the GLP. Overall, this doggo is versatile, calm, and family-oriented. They’ll make an excellent choice as a family companion dog.

For example, the German Long Haired Pointer is loyal and affectionate with their family members. Also, they’re excellent around young children, other dogs, and meeting new people. Unfortunately, they’re an average watchdog and will keep an eye on the territory, barking to alert you if anything feels off. However, they’ll be friendly to just about anyone. As with all dog breeds, the German Long Haired Pointer will need early socialization and training from a young age, no matter how friendly and gentle they are. Luckily, they’re easy to train.

German Long Haired Pointer – A Great Family Dog

German Long Haired Pointers are large dogs. For instance, they can grow about 22 to 28 inches tall and weigh between 55 and 80 pounds. In addition, they have a medium double coat that requires little grooming. On the other hand, they shed a moderate amount. So, you won’t need to bring them to the professional grooming salon often, but you’ll want to brush their coat at least once a week to keep the loose hairs under control. Also, it’ll keep their coat looking nice.

Also, this dog breed has high energy levels. Their size and activity levels won’t do well in an apartment. The German Long Haired Pointer needs a bigger house with a fenced-in yard to run around and play games. For example, they need at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day.

Finally, bring them to the vet at least once a year for their annual checkup. This doggo has an average lifespan of about 12 to 14 years with proper care.
