The German Shorthaired Pointer is a purebred dog breed part of the sporting group. They go by many other nicknames, such as German Pointer (Shorthaired), Deutscher, Kurzhaariger Vortsehund, or the Kurzhaar. This dog breed comes from Germany. Initially bred in the 1600s, the German Shorthaired Pointer was used for general hunting. For example, they would point in the direction of the prey so their hunters would be about to find it. Today, this dog breed is an excellent family companion dog.

For instance, the German Shorthaired Pointer is friendly, smart, and willing to please. They’re loyal and affectionate with their family members. Also, this purebred is excellent with young children, other dogs, and being around new people. However, they’re a good watchdog and bark to alert you of approaching new people. Luckily, this doggo isn’t aggressive. They need early socialization and training to get along well with others. However, German Shorthaired Pointers have a high prey drive, so you’ll need to supervise them and train them around cats and other smaller animals you may have in the home.

German Shorthaired Pointer – A Friendly Dog

German Shorthaired Pointers are medium-sized dogs where males are slightly bigger than females. For instance, males can grow to be about 23 to 25 inches tall and weigh between 55 and 70 pounds. On the other hand, females can grow to be about 21 to 23 inches tall and weigh between 45 and 60 pounds. Also, they have a short and smooth coat that doesn’t require too much grooming. However, they shed a moderate amount, so you’ll want to brush their coat at least two to three times per week to keep the loose hairs under control.

In addition, this dog breed has high energy levels and needs at least 90 minutes of physical activity per day. They don’t do well in an apartment and need a bigger house with a fenced-in yard. Finally, bring them to the vet once a year for their annual checkup. This doggo has an average lifespan of about ten to 12 years with proper care.
