The German Wirehaired Pointer is a purebred dog breed part of the sporting group. This dog breed comes from Germany and goes by a few other nicknames. For example, they also go by the Drahthaar or the Deusch Drathaar. Initially bred in the 1800s, the German Wirehaired Pointer was used for general hunting. They’d point toward their prey, allowing their hunters to give chase. Today, this breed is affectionate, eager, and enthusiastic, making an excellent family companion dog.

For example, German Wirehaired Pointers are loyal and affectionate with their family members. In addition, they’re great watchdogs but are open to meeting new people. However, when it comes to young children and other dogs, the German Wirehaired Pointer needs time to warm up to them. Luckily, this dog breed is easy to train. Early socialization and training will go a long way for them.

German Wirehaired Pointer – A Great Family Dog

This dog breed is medium-sized, with males slightly taller than females. For example, females can grow about 22 to 24 inches tall while males grow to be about 24 to 26 inches tall. On the other hand, regardless of gender, this doggo should weigh anywhere between 50 and 70 pounds. In addition, they have a medium wiry double coat that needs monthly grooming. You can bring them to a professional grooming salon or bathe them yourself. However, the German Wirehaired Pointer sheds a lot, so daily brushing is ideal.

Also, this doggo has high energy levels and a high prey drive. Therefore, they won’t do well in an apartment. Instead, they need a bigger house with a fenced-in yard to get their exercise. Also, be careful of squirrels and other small animals. Once they catch a scent, they’ll be off on the hunt. In addition, they should never be off-leash either. Overall, they have an average lifespan of about 14 to 16 years.
