The Great Pyrenees is a purebred dog breed that’s part of the working group. They go by a couple of other nicknames, such as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Chien des Pyrenees, or the Chien de Montagne des Pyrenees. This is an ancient dog breed from Asia in 1,000 B.C, initially bred as a sheep guardian. However, this dog breed is also a great companion. For instance, they’re smart, patient, and calm.

For example, the Great Pyrenees is loyal and affectionate with its family members. Also, they’re good around young children, other dogs, and meeting new people. However, they’re guardians and will be a watchdog first. So, they’ll bark at new people and alert you if someone is approaching. To nip this behavior in the bud, you’ll want to give them early socialization and training. This doggo can be tricky to train since they’re independent, so you can hire a professional dog trainer to help.

Great Pyrenees – A Very Large Dog

This purebred is a large dog where males are bigger than females. For example, males can grow to be about 27 to 32 inches tall and weigh between 100 to 140 pounds. On the other hand, females can grow to be about 25 to 29 inches tall and weigh between 85 and 115 pounds. In addition, the Great Pyrenees has a medium double coat that needs regular grooming. You can bring them to a professional grooming salon or do it yourself at home. Also, this dog breed sheds a moderate amount. So, you’ll want to brush their coat at least two to three times per week to keep the loose hairs under control.

Finally, this dog breed is prone to certain health issues. So, bring them to the vet at least once a year for their annual checkup and keep them up to date with their vaccinations. The Great Pyrenees has an average lifespan of about ten to 12 years with proper care.
