The Keeshond is a purebred dog breed that’s part of the non-sporting group. This doggo goes by a couple of other different nicknames, such as the Chien Loup, Deutscher Wolfspitz, Dutch Barge Dog, German Wolfspitz, Kees, or the Smiling Dutchman. This dog breed comes from the Netherlands, dating back to the 1700s. Initially bred as a barge watchdog and companion, the Keeshond is still a family companion dog today. For example, this doggo is friendly, lively, and outgoing.

There’s a lot to love about the Keeshond. For example, they’re loyal and affectionate with their family members. Also, they’re excellent around young children, other dogs, and meeting new people. They make a great watchdog and bark to alert you of anything. However, if a stranger comes over, they’ll welcome them warmly. In addition, they bark a lot to get your attention or because they want to hear themselves talk. Luckily, this dog breed is easy to train if you’re going to nip that in the bud. As with all dog breeds, the Keeshond needs early socialization and training.

Keeshond – A Great Family Dog

Keeshonds are medium-sized dogs, with males being slightly taller than females. For example, males can grow to be about 17 to 18 inches tall, while females can be about 16 to 17 inches tall. Regardless of gender, this doggo should weigh between 35 and 45 pounds. In addition, they have a long double coat that needs regular grooming. You can bring them to a professional grooming salon once a month or bathe them at home as needed. Also, they shed a lot. So, you’ll want to brush their coat at least two to three times a week to keep their coat healthy and looking nice.

Finally, the Keeshond has moderate energy levels but still needs a good exercise to stay healthy and fit. They won’t do well in an apartment (thanks to their barking) and will love having a bigger house with a fenced-in yard.
