The Kishu Ken is a purebred dog breed that’s confident, alert, and good-natured. This dog breed goes by a couple of other nicknames, such as the Kishu or the Kishu Inu. Dating back to 1,000 B.C., this dog breed comes from Japan. Initially bred for hunting deer, wild boar, and bears, this doggo is a great family companion today.

For instance, the Kishu Ken is loyal and affectionate with their family members. Also, they’re great around young children, other dogs, and meeting new people. However, they’re more friendly to strangers than they are to other dogs and children. So, Kishu Kens need early socialization and training. In addition, supervise them when around other dogs and young children. This dog breed can be tricky to train. You can hire a professional dog trainer to help you if needed. Alternatively, you can bring your dog to group training sessions at your local pet store to help with socialization.

Kishu Ken – An Easy To Keep Dog

Kishu Kens are medium-sized dogs. For example, they can grow about 19 to 22 inches tall and weigh between 30 and 60 pounds. In addition, they have a short double coat that sheds a moderate amount. So, to keep their coat looking clean, you’ll want to brush them at least two to three times per week. It will also keep the shedding under control. Luckily, they don’t need much grooming. You can bathe them as needed once in a while at home.

In addition, this dog breed doesn’t have high energy levels. In fact, they only need about 30 minutes of physical activity per day. So, they’ll do well living in an apartment as long as they get the exercise they need. Also, this doggo will love having a bigger house with a fenced-in yard to call their own. This dog breed has an average lifespan of about 12 to 15 years with proper care.
