The Lancashire Heeler is a purebred dog breed that’s affectionate, versatile, and intelligent. This dog breed goes by a couple of other nicknames, such as the Ormskirk Heeler or the Lancashire Terrier. Initially bred for herding and ratting, this breed comes from Great Britain in the 1800s. There’s a lot to love about this dog breed. For instance, they’re an excellent family companion dog.

For example, the Lancashire Heeler is loyal and affectionate with its family members. Also, they’re excellent around young children, other dogs, and meeting new people. They’re good watchdogs and bark to alert you if someone approaches the house. However, they’ll be friendly to the stranger regardless. Also, they bark a lot anyway because this breed loves to hear itself talk. Therefore, they need early socialization and training. Luckily, this dog breed is easy to train.

Lancashire Heeler – A Family Dog

Lancashire Heelers are small dogs. For example, they can grow to be about ten to 12 inches tall and weigh between nine and 17 pounds. In addition, they have a short double coat that requires little grooming. So, for the most part, this breed is relatively low-maintenance. However, their coat sheds a moderate amount. So, you’ll want to brush their coat at least once a week to keep the loose hairs under control. Also, it’ll keep their coat looking nice.

Due to their size, the Lancashire Heeler can live well in a bigger house with a fenced-in yard or an apartment. First, however, they need to get their exercise needs met. For instance, this doggo has high energy levels and requires at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day.

Finally, they’re prone to specific health issues. So, be sure to bring them to the vet at least once a year for their annual checkup. With proper care, the Lancashire Heeler has an average lifespan of about 12 to 15 years.
