The Lowchen is a purebred dog breed that’s part of the non-sporting group. Also known as the Little Lion Dog, this breed comes from France and Germany in the 1500s. Initially bred as a companion dog, the Lowchen is today’s great family companion dog. For example, they’re affectionate, outgoing, and positive.

Also, Lowchens are loyal and affectionate with their family members. In addition, they’re excellent with young children. They might need some time to warm up with meeting new people and other dogs. However, they’re relatively friendly with everyone. With early socialization and proper training, the Lowchen will get along well with everyone. They’re an excellent watchdog and will protect you and their home from strangers before welcoming them. Luckily, this dog breed isn’t aggressive, and they will only bark at them to alert you. This behavior can be nipped with training if needed.

The Lowchen – A Great Family Dog

Lowchens are small dogs. For example, they can grow about 12 to 14 inches tall and weigh between eight and 18 pounds. In addition, this dog breed has a long, wavy coat. It requires monthly grooming that you can do yourself at home. Alternatively, you can bring them to a professional grooming salon. Also, they shed a little bit. To keep the loose hairs under control and their coat looking nice, you can brush them at least once a week.

In addition, this doggo has moderate energy levels. They only need about 30 minutes of physical activity per day, but they like to play. So, you can bring them outside for a little or take them for a long walk. Lowchens can do well in an apartment or a bigger house with a fenced-in yard.

Finally, bring them to the vet at least once a year for their annual checkup. This dog breed has an average lifespan of about 13 to 15 years with proper care.
