The Norwegian Buhund is a purebred dog breed part of the herding group. This doggo goes by a couple of other nicknames, such as the Norsk Buhund, Norwegian Sheepdog, or the Nordiske Sitz-hunde. Dating back to the 10th century, this dog breed comes from Norway. Although they were initially bred as a multipurpose herding dogs, they’re a great family companion dog today. For instance, the Norwegian Buhund is confident, smart, and perceptive.

In addition, this purebred is loyal and affectionate with their family members. Also, they’re great around young children, other dogs, and meeting new people. However, they might be shy or wary of others at first. So, this doggo needs early socialization and training. You can train this pup yourself, but they can be independent or a bit stubborn. If you need help, you can hire a professional dog trainer. Norwegian Buhunds are excellent watchdogs. Luckily, they’re not aggressive, but they will bark a lot. This breed barks not just to alert you of something but also to get your attention and hear themselves talk.

Norwegian Buhunds are medium-sized dogs, with males being slightly bigger than females. For example, males can grow to be about 17 to 18.5 inches tall and weigh between 31 and 40 pounds. On the other hand, females can grow to be about 16 to 17.5 inches tall and weigh between 26 to 35 pounds. Also, they have a medium double coat that doesn’t require too much grooming. You can bathe them as needed at home or bring them to a professional grooming salon once in a while. However, this doggo does shed a moderate amount, so you’ll want to brush their coat at least once a week to keep the loose hairs under control.

Finally, they have high energy levels. This doggo prefers living in a bigger house with a fenced-in yard rather than an apartment. This dog breed has an average lifespan of about 12 to 15 years with proper care.
