The Norwegian Elkhound is a purebred dog breed that’s part of the hound group. This doggo also goes by a couple of other nicknames, such as the Norsk Elghund, Grahund, or the Grey Elkhound. Dating back to 500 B.C., this dog breed comes from Norway. Initially bred for hunting large game, herding, and guarding, the Norwegian Elkhound is a great family companion dog today. For instance, they’re confident, friendly, and dependable.

For example, this dog breed is loyal and affectionate with its family members. In addition, the Norwegian Elkhound is great around young children, other dogs, and meeting new people. However, they might be wary or shy around children or other dogs. This doggo is more welcoming to strangers. However, they do make for a good watchdog. For instance, if someone new approaches the house, they’ll bark to alert you. Norwegian Elkhounds bark a lot, though. For example, they’ll do so to alert you to get your attention because they’re excited or because they want to hear themselves talk.

Norwegian Elkhound – A Medium Sized Dog

The Norwegian Elkhound needs early socialization and training, as with all dog breeds. Luckily, this dog breed is easy to train. So, you can nip any unwanted behaviors in the bud yourself.

Norwegian Elkhounds are medium-sized dogs. For instance, they can grow about 19 to 21 inches tall and weigh between 48 and 55 pounds. They have a medium double coat that requires regular grooming. You can do this at home or bring them to a professional grooming salon as needed. In addition, they shed and drool a moderate amount. So, you’ll want to keep up with brushing their coat and washing their face to help them look their best all the time.

Finally, they have moderate energy levels but will prefer to live in a bigger house with a fenced-in yard rather than an apartment. The Norwegian Elkhound has an average lifespan of about 12 to 15 years with proper care.
