The Otterhound is a purebred dog breed that’s part of the hound group. This doggo comes from England, first developed in the 1300s. Initially bred for hunting otters and scenting, Otterhounds are excellent family companion dogs today. For example, they’re even-tempered, amiable, and boisterous.

There’s a lot to love about this dog breed. For example, the Otterhound is loyal and affectionate with its family members. Also, they’re excellent with young children, other dogs, and meeting new people. They might be wary about meeting other dogs at first, but this breed is relatively friendly. Also, they do make a great watchdog, but Otterhounds will welcome the strangers warmly. For instance, they’ll bark to alert you that someone is near, but that’s about it. Despite their friendly demeanor, Otterhounds need early socialization and training as all other dog breeds. Luckily, this doggo is responsive to training and is easy to train. However, you can still hire a professional dog trainer to help you if needed.

Otterhound – A Good Family Dog

Otterhounds are large dogs, with males being slightly bigger than females. For example, males can grow to be about 24 to 27 inches tall and weigh between 90 and 110 pounds. On the other hand, females can grow to be about 24 to 26 inches tall and weigh between 70 and 90 pounds. In addition, they have a medium double coat that requires minimal grooming. Therefore, you can take them to a professional grooming salon about once every month for a good cleaning. Also, they shed and drool a moderate amount. So, you’ll also want to brush their coat and wash their face at least once a week to keep shedding and saliva under control.

Even though this doggo has moderate energy levels, they won’t do well in an apartment due to their size. The Otterhound will live more comfortably in a bigger house with a fenced-in yard. This dog breed has an average lifespan of about ten to 13 years with proper care.
