The Pekingese is a purebred dog breed that’s part of the toy group. In addition, this doggo goes by a couple of other nicknames, such as the Foo Dog, Lion Dog, Peking Palasthund, Peke, Sundog, Sleeve Dog, or the Pelchie. This breed was first developed in the 8th century to be a lap dog from China. However, they were often treated like royalty. For instance, the Pekingese is independent, headstrong, and confident.

There’s a lot to love about this doggo. For example, the Pekingese is loyal and affectionate to its family members. In addition, they’re great around young children, other dogs, and meeting new people. However, they might be wary at first. On the other hand, they make for an excellent watchdog and bark to alert you of anything. So, you’ll want to provide them with early socialization and training. However, the Pekingese dogs can be stubborn, so that training might be tricky. You can hire a professional dog trainer to help you out if needed.

Pekingese – A Great Family Dog

Pekingese dogs are small, with males weighing a little more than females. For example, males can weigh between eight and 14 pounds while females can weigh between seven and 13 pounds. Regardless of gender, this doggo is short, only growing to be about six to nine inches tall. In addition, they have a long double coat that requires regular grooming. You can bring them to a professional grooming salon at least once a month or every other month. Also, they shed a moderate amount, so you’ll want to brush their coat at least two to three times per week.

Finally, the Pekingese isn’t an active dog. They only need about 20 minutes of physical activity per day to stay healthy and fit. So they’ll be able to live comfortably in an apartment or a bigger house with a fenced-in yard.
