If you’ve never heard of the Puli, you’re missing out! The Puli is a small to medium Hungarian breed of herding dog, though it’s not quite as common in the USA as it is over there. It’s recognizable by its coat, which is in dreadlocks! For the most part, these dogs are usually black, though other colors have popped up over time. Some Pulis’ coats can look very different, since some have thinner or thicker cords, depending on the dog.
These dogs may look bulky, but they’re actually very active and agile. The Puli is known to have a lot of energy and they need a lot of outlets. Although they can live in an apartment, keeping them confined will require long walks every day to ensure their needs are met. Keeping a high-energy dog like a Puli inside without making sure they have enough to do is a recipe for disaster!
Puli – A Great Family Dog
They are also very intelligent, which should make training a delight. They’ll pick up on good manners quickly and are fairly easy to please their owners. These dogs will bond well to the family they’re with, but you might find they’re wary of strangers. You can help this with a lot of early socialization and ensuring every experience with a stranger is a good one. However, they’ll likely never be the most sociable dog in the world!
The good news is that they tend to be great with animals and children. Make sure you take introductions slow and ensure your children are respectful of the dog. As long as these rules are followed, your dog will be a great family companion. Just ensure you get started on that training and socialization early! You are going to absolutely love owning one of these amazing dogs.
