Originating from Spain, the Pyrenean Mastiff is a large guard dog that’s used to protecting livestock from predators such as wolves and other dangerous creatures. Impressive! They weigh in at up to 180lb, so they’re no laughing matter. They have thick coats that protect them from harsh temperatures, but do not make the mistake of shaving it in summer. Dogs with coats like this are usually more comfortable, even in the heat.
Because they’re guard dogs, they need a job to do. Without a purpose, they can become antsy and destructive, and no one wants that on their hands. You should make sure they have livestock to guard or plenty of stimulation at a minimum. These big dogs not only need exercise, they need mental stimulation and enrichment. Look up plenty of great ideas for providing it!
Pyrenean Mastiff – A Huge Dog
Their guarding nature means they can be a little hard to handle. A Pyrenean Mastiff is not a great choice for first-time owners. They’re very wary of strangers because of their guarding job, and all of the training in the world sometimes isn’t enough to go against their nature! Despite that, they truly love their people and will be protective of the people they consider being in their flock. They just need someone who can straddle the line between firm and patient, as well as staying gentle, to ensure they get the training they need.
As you might have guessed, these are not apartment dogs. They’re not suited to being cooped up indoors and need space to roam. You may need a secure fence, however, as these dogs can have poor recall if they take off after a predator! That stubborn nature is something to consider. Once you do get to know this large dog breed you will absolutely love them.
