Have you been thinking about bringing a Rat Terrier into the family? These are truly awesome dogs, so it’s a great choice. They come in Miniature or Standard version, but are usually not too large even as a standard dog. They have short coats but despite not having much hair, they do tend to shed quite a lot. Be aware of this if you have allergies and are looking for a pup who won’t aggravate them! They can come in almost any color, and have pricked ears.
In terms of temperament, you really couldn’t ask for a better dog with people. They love their families and are the perfect balance of affectionate and playful. They’re even gentle with young kids and very sociable with strangers. That makes them the perfect dog to hang out with you on social outings. Of course, to reach their full potential, you should make sure you train them well. Give them plenty of socialization opportunities as puppies.
Rat Terrier – A Great Family Dog
They do tend to be watchdogs and can be a little vocal if they think something is amiss. That means it’s important to consider your living situation. If you live in an apartment, for example, your neighbors mind end up annoyed with this! While you can teach them a “quiet” command, it may be a while before that’s reliable.
They can live with cats if brought up with them, but it’s a little risky, and they shouldn’t be left alone unsupervised. Due to their breeding intention, the Rat Terrier might give chase to other smaller animals. If you have rabbits or rats that often roam the house, they may not be the best choice of dog for you. They are, however, amazing with humans, and make great pets in the right house. This is a breed that you are quickly going to fall in love with.
