The Redbone Coonhound is pretty recognizable due to its color: red, as the name suggests! While many Redbone Coonhounds might have white markings, there’s no acceptable standard outside of this color. They also have the typical hound floppy ears and tend to be somewhat large dogs. Their coats are short, and they’re moderate shedders.

They make great family companions. The Redbone Coonhound is very loyal and affectionate, and will bond well to their people. They’re great for families with kids, as they tend to be gentle and patient. That doesn’t mean you should let kids take advantage of this, of course. Any dog will snap if pushed hard enough, so make sure to monitor interactions and ensure your dog is comfortable. This will keep their good nature!

They’re a watchdog, but not a guard dog. The main difference between these is that a watchdog will alert you when something is wrong, but won’t attack intruders. Guard dogs can be a little more aggressive! This is still something to consider, though, as neighbors may get annoyed with your vocal dog if you live close together.

Redbone Coonhound – A Watchdog

They can be wary of strangers. You can help this by introducing them to lots of strangers as puppies and making sure they have positive experiences. Have strangers give them treats and take things at the dog’s pace!

Due to their hunting instincts, they do have a tendency to give chase to smaller animals. This means you need to consider if they’re the right pet to live with smaller animals, and you’ll need to put a lot of thought and effort into recall training. If these dogs catch a scent, they may just take off! Beware of this if they’re ever off-leash. You will quickly fall in love with this brilliant breed.
