The Saint Berdoodle is a mix between the Saint Bernard and the Poodle. Since Doodle mixes are very popular and have reached designer breed status, you should be careful if going to a breeder. Unethical breeders love to make a quick buck by selling dogs that have a fancy name but haven’t been health-tested or had any shots yet. This can be dangerous, as you can end up with an unhappy, unhealthy dog. Don’t support businesses like this!
If you do manage to find a sound Saint Berdoodle, they’re great dogs. Expect them to be pretty huge in size, thanks to the influence of the Saint Bernard. You’re likely to have a giant on your hands! You may end up with a dog that has the Poodle coat, as most people want due to its lack of shedding. However, you also may end up with the Saint Bernard coat! Although these dogs can be easier on allergies, it’s not always guaranteed.
The Saint Berdoodle – A Great Family Dog
These dogs are very intelligent and need a lot of exercise. Although you may have heard that the Saint Bernard is notoriously lazy for a dog of its size, this isn’t true of the Poodle. Your dog will need long walks and preferably space to roam around. A fenced-in yard is always a good help for any dog with a lot of energy.
Saint Bernards have great nanny instincts that will hopefully pass down to your dog. This makes them excellent with other animals and children despite their size. However, they are still large dogs who may not be aware of their own strength, so bear this in mind despite their good nature. Monitor interactions with kids and small animals. They have the best intentions, but they can be a lot to deal with.
