The Saint Bernard is most known for its sheer size. Weighing in at up to 180lb, this is far from a small dog! They have white, black, and tan fur that can come in either long or short varieties. They’re known to drool a lot too, so be careful of this! Otherwise, they’re large, strong, muscular dogs who tend to look more intimidating than they actually are.
Due to the fact they were bred for mountain rescue, they’re highly intelligent and in tune with people. Although some intelligent dogs have a stubborn streak and can be hard to handle, this doesn’t tend to be true of the Saint Bernard. Despite their sheer size, they’ll usually listen to their people. They bond well with their humans and have nannying instincts that mean they’ll watch over the family. They’re excellent with kids, though their sheer size means you will have to monitor interactions. Even with the best intentions, some dogs of this size don’t know their own strength!
Saint Bernard – A Big Friendly Family Dog
They also tend to be easygoing with other dogs and cats. This makes them great additions to a family who already has a lot going on and needs a puppy who’ll fit in.
They can be a little wary of strangers due to the instinct to protect their family, so lots of early socialization is needed. However, the great thing about a Saint Bernard is that despite their sheer size, they don’t need much exercise. Saint Bernards are quite happy to be lazy! A half-hour walk every day and some space to roam around and satisfy their curiosity will be enough in terms of physical exercise. Provide some mental stimulation for them too, just to ensure they get everything they need. You will quickly fall in love with this gorgeous breed.
