The Saluki is an ancient breed of kings that’s quite unusual to see in the USA, but still an awesome dog! They were bred to be hunters and are very agile pups. They’re fairly large dogs with short, smooth coats that will shed quite a bit, so may not be the best choice for those who have allergies. They come in a huge variety of colors, and there’s no shortage of combinations — from tan to black and white. They have long faces and soft, floppy ears.
While a Saluki can be a great dog in the right household, they aren’t recommended for first-time dog owners for a number of reasons.
The first is that, despite their intelligence, they can be very stubborn. They like to do things their way! Therefore, it takes a lot of patience and positive reinforcement to train them. If you don’t know what you’re doing, the Saluki can run rings around you. Make sure to hire a professional dog trainer if you’re having issues with getting your Saluki to listen to you. That’s the best way to combat any behavioral issues, as dogs can be sensitive and you don’t want to mess it up.
The Saluki – A Great Family Dog
They love their families and bond well to them. However, they don’t tend to do well with other animals or small kids. This is a huge consideration if you plan to introduce children or pets in the future (or already have them). They’re wary of strangers, so you really need to take the time to socialize them as puppies. Have them meet lots of strangers at their pace and the strangers can give them treats. This should help although, simply due to genetics and nature, they’ll likely never be the most social dog around! A wonderful dog breed.
