The Shichon is a mix between the Shih-Tzu and the Bichon Frise. Thanks to its new status as designer breed, many people are selling them — but you should be wary. Unethical breeders and puppy mills love to make a quick buck by selling puppies who may be sick or unsocialized. Don’t support these businesses by buying from them and allowing them to breed more unhappy puppies!
If you do find a good Shichon, however, they’re a great dog. Thanks to the parent breeds, they’re likely to have very low shedding. That means if you suffer from allergies, this can be a truly great dog to have. They’ll likely be very small and almost teddy bear-like in appearance, so you can guarantee you’ll have one of the cutest pups around!
The Shichon – An Friendly Dog
This is very playful and affectionate breed who might be great for first-time owners. They have low exercise needs due to their small size and will likely bond very well to their family. As long as they’re socialized, they’ll get on well with kids and other animals too.
Although they’re intelligent, be prepared to be patient for two main reasons! The first is that they’re small and potty training may take a while, as it can be hard for small puppies to get their bladder control. Clean up any accidents inside without making a fuss and praise them heavily for going outside when they do. Take them outside every thirty minutes and slowly increase the time.
They also may inherit a bit of a stubborn streak from the Shih-Tzu. If this happens, don’t lose your cool! Come armed with lots of high-value tasty treats and you’ll find it’s not hard to get past. You will quickly learn to love this wonderful dog breed once you own one.
