Although most people associate Terriers with being small, the Skye Terrier is actually a medium-sized dog. They have a double coat that comes in a variety of colors and tends to hang over their eyes. Most people associate the Skye Terrier with the color black. You will have to brush them frequently to prevent mats, but they don’t tend to shed a lot. If you suffer from allergies, the sad news is that no dog is truly hypoallergenic — but the Skye Terrier gets pretty close!
They are prone to a few health issues, such as allergies. Allergies are hard to test in dogs so make sure you pay close attention to reactions. Pick food that works well for them.
Skye Terrier – A Low Maintenance Dog Breed
In terms of exercise, this dog actually doesn’t need too much. Like any dog, they need enough to stay fit and healthy, but one good walk a day should do. They’re also good apartment dogs for this reason! They also make good watchdogs and are quick to bark to let you know if something is up. If you live in an apartment or townhouse with lots of people passing by and easily annoyed neighbors, this may not be a good thing though.
They are quite independent. If you’re looking for a dog that might do well being alone while you’re at work, they’re a good choice. However, you’ll still have to do some work with them, as any dog can get separation anxiety. Start with small periods alone and eventually build up to bigger ones.
One thing to note is that they may not get along with other animals. Take it slow and steady. Introducing dogs on neutral territory first can really help the interaction. Once you get to know the dog breed you will quickly grow to love them.
