The Sloughi is a very tall dog with a lean body and floppy ears. They come in a variety of colors and have very short coats. Although they don’t seem to have much hair, don’t let them fool you! They do tend to shed quite a bit and you should be careful of this, especially if you have allergies.
These dogs can be prone to bloat. While bloating may be an insignificant after-effect of eating a lot in humans, this isn’t the case with dogs. It can even be fatal. To avoid bloat, don’t let them do any vigorous exercise for one hour after eating a meal. That means you should feed them when you get back from their early morning walk, not before!
The Sloughi – The Ideal Family Dog
The Sloughi loves its people and tends to bond very well to them. They love kids too and are gentle with them. However, you should always supervise interactions and teach your kids how to respect the dog. Any dog can snap if pushed hard enough in that direction. Don’t take advantage of their good nature.
They have high exercise needs and love space to run! They do, however, have a high prey drive, so be careful. Many people think they can take their Sloughi to an open field and let it off-leash. If they lock onto a scent, they’re gone! Their recall can also be poor when they’re distracted so take the time to train them.
The other thing to remember about these dogs is that they tend to be very sensitive. As with any dog, you should only train them with positive reinforcement. Anything else can hurt your relationship with your dog and make them fearful or even aggressive. Once you get to know the dog you will quickly learn to love them.
