The Swedish Lapphund can be pretty difficult to find in the US, so it’s going to take some commitment if you want one! However, as these are gorgeous dogs, it’s understandable that they’re desirable. They’re medium-sized dogs with a long double coat that may shed quite a bit, especially during shedding seasons throughout the year. They only come in the color black, though they may be solid black or have white markings. If your dog has any other color or is predominantly white, it’s likely not a purebred Swedish Lapphund and may be a mix.
This dog has a lot of great qualities. They get on well with people and tend to be very open to meeting strangers. That means you can take them places without having to worry too much about their nerves around new people. Of course, to reach this full potential, the Swedish Lapphund needs training while young. Make sure you give them positive experiences with strangers and reward them for good behavior.
Swedish Lapphund – A Smart Dog
They can be a bit wary around children and other dogs. This is where you really have to socialize them, but also set firm boundaries — with both your dog and whoever they’re meeting! Dogs shouldn’t be getting up in your Swedish Lapphund’s face and kids shouldn’t either.
They are watchdogs and can be a little vocal. Make sure you take this into account if you have neighbors close by or live in an apartment. This is hard to train out of them, as it’s just in their nature.
As they’re highly intelligent, you should make sure you’re meeting their needs. Give them lots of enrichment, like lick mats and puzzle toys. You might find this tires them out even more than physical exercise. A wonderful dog breed you will quickly learn to love.
