The Swedish Vallhund is a herding dog. You might struggle to find a breeder in the US, as there aren’t too many, but your patience will pay off if you hold out for an ethical breeder and avoid puppy mills!
They’re small to medium-sized dogs with a short double coat that sheds very heavily. Make sure you take this into account when bringing a Swedish Vallhund into your home. They’re likely to leave hair everywhere, which is no good for allergies! You’ll likely have to find the time to brush them frequently and make sure you get rid of all that excess hair.
Because this dog is a herding breed, their energy levels are relatively high. It seems like they’re always ready to go! Make sure you get them good exercise every day, and a fenced-in backyard can really help with wearing them out. It’s not a requirement, though. These dogs can live in apartments if you’re ready to put in the work to meet their needs.
Swedish Vallhund – A Great Family Dog
They’re an all-around great dog, really. They’re very intelligent and easy to train, and don’t possess much of a stubborn streak. They love their people and will work hard to please them. This means they pick up on good manners and tricks easily, though their smaller size might mean potty training takes longer than you initially expect. The smaller the dog, the smaller the bladder, and the longer it’ll take for them to get control of this.
They’re good with adults and children alike, and can be great with other animals too. As with any dog though, you should keep introductions carefully supervised and take everything slow to integrate them into your home. If you put in the work, this will be the best dog and a breed you will quickly love.
