The Tibetan Terrier is known to be a great herding and guardian dog. They aren’t true Terrier dogs and are usually medium in size. They have a long double coat that comes in a few different colors, from black and white to brindle. You’ll have to make sure you take care of this coat. You need to brush double coats frequently, especially during shedding season, to ensure they don’t get matted. Mats aren’t only unsightly and require shaving, they can become very painful for the dog! It’s important to be proactive and preventative.
These dogs are exceptionally loyal and truly love their family members. They’re affectionate and if you treat your dog well, you’ll have the most loving little pup. They also tend to be good with kids and other dogs, but don’t take this for granted. Keep introductions slow and make sure you’re reading their body language. It’s also important to teach kids how to respect dogs. Many people will look at a dog like a Tibetan Terrier and think since they’re patient with kids, the kids can do anything and it doesn’t matter. Not so! Any dog can snap.
Tibetan Terrier – A High Energy Dog
They have pretty high energy levels for their small size, so you should prepare yourself to meet their needs. A fenced-in backyard is great for these guys, but they can live in an apartment if given appropriate outlets and thought. They’re also highly intelligent but you might find that your dog has a stubborn streak. Whatever you do, make sure you stay patient! Equip yourself with lots of high-value treats and give them a lot of praise when they do the right thing and make the right decisions. This will seriously help you develop a bond with your dog and train them well.
