The Whippet is known for looking like a small Greyhound. A Whippet has a very lean body, deep chest, and carries their tail very low. They come in a variety of different colors and have short, smooth coats. They’re very short so you don’t have to worry about brushing them too often, which is a major plus for many people.
These dogs love to run. They need an outlet for that, so a large fenced-in backyard can really come in handy here. If you don’t have that, you’ll have to seek out places where they can run. However, it’s important that you don’t just take them to an open field and let them loose.
The reason for this is that Whippets have a bit of a prey drive. If they lock onto a scent, they may chase it and be completely deaf to your recall. Long leash training can be very handy here, though make sure to use a harness so they don’t run the length of the leash and end up choked by a collar. You should also take the time to practice recall often, though keep the knowledge that it may never be truly reliable.
Whippet – A Very Smart Dog
This also poses problems when it comes to living with smaller animals. Whippets may not be the best dog to live with cats, and especially not rabbits.
They are, however, very intelligent and truly love their people. Treat them kindly and train them with lots of patience and positive reinforcement. Your efforts will pay off and you’ll find that you end with the best companion you could have imagined. Like any breed, you just have to be aware of their challenges to be successful in training!
Once you do get to know the breed you will quickly fall in love with them.
