Get to know this breed with our collection of Brittany photos!
The Brittany gets its name from its original home, the westernmost region of France. In the Medieval period and beyond, they were primarily bird-hunting dogs, although they easily learned all sorts of tasks. Tapestries from the 17th century show white and liver-spotted dogs on bird hunts. They were popular among the French peasantry, and even poachers! No need to keep a full kennel of hunting dogs when you have a Brittany. Even today, these pointers aid sportsmen everywhere.
The Brittany is usually white with spotting in a variety of colors, from orange, to roan, to liver. They have striking and pretty wavy double coats. Their fur is easy to maintain: a daily gentle once-over with a hound brushing glove, and combing through their featherings, will keep them looking their absolute best. The Brittany sheds an average amount, making them less than ideal for allergy sufferers. One advantage is very low drool.
The Brittany does very well in families and with young children. Make sure to supervise any interaction between dogs and children.
Exercise and Training
If you commit to a Brittany, be prepared for lifelong exercise and play. Your Brittany will always need a task to complete, and can easily get bored. Luckily, there are many fun options open for Brittany-friendly activities. These can be as simple as hikes and swims, or something more in-depth, like agility courses, FAST CAT, and dock diving.
The Brittany is generally obedient and eager to please their owner. Any type of training is sure to be a breeze with this breed.
